Across the UK, there has been much tutting as people realise that the cheap ready meals that they have been eating may include horse. Or rather as a journalist pointed out, most of us have probably eaten a bit of shergar over the last few years.
As a nation of animal lovers, many people are outraged that it is horse but personally, I am more angry that my choice has been taken away. I choose to eat chicken, fish and beef but not European veal, bush meat or battery farmed poultry.
This is my choice and to read the ingredients on a pack and find that it is essentially lies is deeply frustrating and leads me on to the next question, what else are they lying about?
The supermarkets are fighting back and working hard to regain our trust but I do hope that this means more people will read the ingredients and question the contents of food.
Last year, I did a blog about Palm Oil and I look to avoid this whenever possible but it can be called a variety of things so it is important to understand exactly what is in your food. Hopefully the horse meat debacle will make people more interested in what they are eating.
Or am I being too optimistic?
